Open Data Day is a gathering of citizens in cities around the world to write applications, liberate data, create visualizations and publish analyses using open public data to show support for and encourage the adoption open data policies by the world’s local, regional and national governments.
Fund Africa together with Reality Check Uganda, Powered by the Open knowledge Foundation were blessed to be one of the Organizers for the Open Data Day Kampala 2015. The event took place on 28th January at Chez Moi Kamwokya center.
Among the participants were Journalists, Researchers, Entrepreneurs, Students and Technologists focusing on the theme ” How to improve Data using Data visualization tools like Videos, Pictures, Charts, Graphs, info-graphs to enhance story telling”.
The event was enlighted by Presentations made by Keynote Speakers Like Mr. Elunya Joseph of the Media Initiative for Open Governance, Mr. Zak Musumba of Multimedia consult, Mr. Ssebandeke Ashraf a Team Lead of Google Development-MUBs and Ms. Catherine Alwenyi Cassidy of Fund Africa Inc.
Participants were briefed on how Google Maps can be used in Locating Stories, Previous tools used by Journalists that worked and didnot work, and an overview of utilising Data Visualisation to improve the quality of stories.The event was followed by power packed discussions and Networking.
Finally a Facebook page was created to continue with Free Data Sharing.
